How does NFDI contribute to ensuring that research data can be used sustainably, thereby facilitating new insights and innovations? These and other questions were the focus of the visit by Petra Olschowski, Minister for Science, Research and the Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg, to the offices of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. in Karlsruhe on 18 August.
The meeting focused on the work of NFDI and its significance for future-oriented research in Baden-Württemberg, Germany and Europe. Among other things, the discussion centred on how research institutions within the NFDI association work together to develop and promote common standards, structures and services for the sustainable use of research data. Other key topics included the EOSC Node Germany, coordinated by NFDI, and the new federal-state agreement (neue Bund-Länder-Vereinbarung), which will apply to NFDI from 2029.
Baden-Württemberg’s perspective also played a role. The state has a strong and diverse research landscape, and numerous institutions from Baden-Württemberg are involved in the NFDI association, which is based in Karlsruhe.
Minister Petra Olschowski’s visit, which took place around a month after the Joint Science Conference (GWK) had taken a positive decision on the continued funding of NFDI after 2028, provided a good opportunity to present current NFDI activities and to engage in a dialogue on the future of an efficient, interconnected and internationally compatible research data infrastructure.
Many thanks for the visit and the open exchange!
