About us

Together with other disciplines, basic plant research faces the challenge of establishing a research data management system which meets both the needs of the community and allows the collection, processing, exchange and archiving of research datasets based on the FAIR principles. Focused on this goal, the work of the DataPLANT Consortium is organized in four task areas. In Task Area I, topics such as data quality, interoperability, and standardization are pursued. In a first step, widely used ontologies and their application will be supported. Furthermore, the completion of these ontologies by adding new terms should be as smooth as possible for the user.

Task Area II (Infrastructure, Software and Service) will provide the infrastructural basis for the developed tools. The DataPLANT hub will serve as a central access point. The personnel support of the researchers is ensured by data stewards, whose training, as well as the coordination of the community contact, falls into the scope of Task Area III. Finally, Task Area IV is responsible for the communication within the project, as well as the integration into the overall NFDI and the promotion of joint efforts.

Goals

DataPLANT works in a data-centric way and builds on existing structures. A central element towards achieving the goal is the Annotated Research Context (ARC), which acts as an entry point and will define the future structure of a data publication in the field. The ARC will cover the entire research cycle, from the experiment through the computational aspects to the actual data and metadata, as well as the resulting publications. It is based on existing formats, terminologies, and guidelines allowing integration of available data into existing repositories to be as seamless as possible. A number of tools and services are already available to ensure a quick start to improved data management from the earliest stages. At the same time, the technical infrastructure for sharing and versioning ARCs is being built. Accordingly, DataPLANT represents the central point of contact in RDM aspects for researchers in the field of basic plant research.
