(Veröffentlicht am 04.04.2022) The war in Ukraine is causing terrible destruction. Every day, digital data treasures of Ukrainian scientists and cultural workers are lost forever. NFDI wants to help preserve these data. We have made direct contact with the organisers of SUCHO (Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online) and enquired about current needs. At the moment helping hands and especially skilled web experts are needed.
We are looking for people with one or more of the following competences:
- General familiarity with web archiving, especially with tools such as the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or the more curated manual tools from the Webrecorder suite.
- Advanced knowledge of web archiving, especially with the ability to run crawls via a range of tools.
- Familiarity with Docker and ability to work with command line tools.
- Ability to perform QA on web archived collections, preferably paired with language skills in Ukrainian and/or Russian.
- Interest and ability to contribute to standardisation efforts for the new web archive format pioneered by the Webrecorder team (WACZ).
Every effort is welcome and contributes to supporting Ukrainian culture professionals. What’s SUCHO?
SUCHO ist a group of more than 1300 cultural heritage professionals – librarians, archivists, researchers, programmers – working together to identify and archive at-risk sites, digital content, and data in Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions while the country is under attack. They are using a combination of technologies to crawl and archive sites and content, including the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, the Browsertrix crawler and the ArchiveWeb.page browser extension and app of the Webrecorder project. So far SUCHO saved more than 20TB of scanned documents, artworks and many other digital materials from 3,000+ websites of Ukrainian museums, libraries and archives. And the work is far from over.
