(Veröffentlicht am 04.04.2022) The war in Ukraine is causing terrible destruction. Every day, digital data treasures of Ukrainian scientists and cultural workers are lost forever. NFDI wants to help preserve these data. We have made direct contact with the organisers of SUCHO (Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online) and enquired about current needs. At the moment helping hands and especially skilled web experts are needed.
We are looking for people with one or more of the following competences:
- General familiarity with web archiving, especially with tools such as the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or the more curated manual tools from the Webrecorder suite.
- Advanced knowledge of web archiving, especially with the ability to run crawls via a range of tools.
- Familiarity with Docker and ability to work with command line tools.
- Ability to perform QA on web archived collections, preferably paired with language skills in Ukrainian and/or Russian.
- Interest and ability to contribute to standardisation efforts for the new web archive format pioneered by the Webrecorder team (WACZ).
Every effort is welcome and contributes to supporting Ukrainian culture professionals. If you can and want to help, please sign up for the group Slack channel to get acquainted with the community and ongoing efforts across various skill levels. Stay tuned for more news regarding upcoming group events coordinated by NFDI consortia members.
Of course you can share this call with your colleagues and/or on social media. #NFDI4SUCHO
Note: SUCHO has started a fundraising campaign with OpenCollective. Learn more here: Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online – Open Collective. The SUCHO team emphasises that it only aims to collect institutional funds and welcomes individual donations to humanitarian aid projects.
What’s SUCHO?
SUCHO ist a group of more than 1300 cultural heritage professionals – librarians, archivists, researchers, programmers – working together to identify and archive at-risk sites, digital content, and data in Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions while the country is under attack. They are using a combination of technologies to crawl and archive sites and content, including the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, the Browsertrix crawler and the ArchiveWeb.page browser extension and app of the Webrecorder project. So far SUCHO saved more than 20TB of scanned documents, artworks and many other digital materials from 3,000+ websites of Ukrainian museums, libraries and archives. And the work is far from over. At its meeting on 11 July 2025, the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) adopted a report on the structural evaluation of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). This is highly relevant for the future design of NFDI.
NFDI would like to thank the Council for the numerous valuable impulses that emerged from the report and very much welcomes the recommendation for the further funding and organisation of the network.
