Coscine is a powerful, scalable, and practical research data platform that enables researchers to collaborate and comply with FAIR principles when using federated storage infrastructures.
Coscine not only offers secure storage and effective access management, but also creates the basis for sustainable, reusable research data in engineering and beyond through validated, high-quality metadata and interoperable interfaces.
Coscine has been in regular operation since 2023. Today, more than 4,500 researchers from 138 universities and research institutions use the platform, and more than 1,000 projects are supported in the field of engineering alone. Low-threshold authentication via DFN-AAI and ORCID enables researchers to collaborate broadly, even across institutions and sectors. Coscine is available to universities in North Rhine-Westphalia and NFDI-associated projects.
A current innovation step is the integration of Coscine with RDMO as part of a joint incubator with the Base Service DMP4NFDI (January–June 2026). The goal is to seamlessly connect data management planning and operational research data management. In the future, metadata from the data management plan can be automatically transferred to Coscine projects. This means that Coscine systematically supports the entire research data lifecycle, from planning to archiving.

New class: Infrastructure for Mathematics (MaRDI)
This course discusses the concepts and services that mathematics students often only learn about during thesis writing or by word of mouth. When introducing research data management topics, we focus on how to do maths efficiently and sustainably.
Best practices in mathematics: small trees (MaRDI)
One example of FAIR mathematics is the project small phylogenetic trees: an early 2000’s mathematical library transformed into a modern website, a software package, and a best practice report.
The Health Study Hub: From Data Silos to Knowledge Infrastructure (NFDI4Health)
The Health Study Hub by NFDI4Health brings together studies, instruments, and documents in one central platform, making health research data systematically discoverable and usable. By providing standardized, FAIR-compliant data, it enhances connectivity, reduces duplication, and accelerates research.
