FAIRagro has established a comprehensive Data Management Plan (DMP) service for the agrosystems research community with the support of the basic service DMP4NFDI. FAIRagro’s DMP Service is built on the open-source Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO), hosted by DMP4NFDI, and provides a discipline-specific template tailored to agricultural research. The service guides researchers to other relevant FAIRagro services through detailed help texts, and provides practical answer options. For additional support, users can seamlessly contact the FAIRagro Helpdesk from within their DMP, enabling them to request feedback on specific questions with just a single click.
Beyond meeting funder requirements, the service promotes good scientific practice, improves knowledge management, reduces the risk of data loss, and makes research data easier to find, access, and reuse according to the FAIR principles, ultimately increasing the long-term value and impact of research. Thanks to the IAM4NFDI login infrastructure implemented in RDMO, the FAIRagro community can easily log in to rdmo.fairagro.net/, select a DMP template, fill it in, and then export it in different formats for publication, documentation or grant proposal applications. They can also invite colleagues to collaborate on the DMP, share it with other stakeholders, save different versions of it, and update it at a later stage of the research project.
The FAIRagro DMP service is the result of multiple incubator projects with DMP4NFDI. In the first incubator project, DMP4NFDI set up the RDMO client for the FAIRagro consortium. During the second incubator project, the customised DMP template for the agrosystem sciences was created based on community feedback. The template was also aligned with the existing NFDI DMP Template Framework, developed by the basic service during their initialisation phase, making it machine-actionable and improving technical interoperability. The framework is based on the standard for machine-actionable DMPs developed by a working group of the international Research Data Alliance (RDA). The third incubator project focused on community outreach and promoting FAIRagro’s domain-specific DMP template through community events and training activities.
Beside these fruitful cooperations, FAIRagro and DMP4NFDI also collaborate in a joint incubator project for TS4NFDI, aimed at dynamically providing terminologies for specific questions in RDMO. This will enable users to select items from predefined vocabularies, thereby enhancing discovery, FAIRness and collaboration within and beyond the NFDI community.
