On 8 and 9 September 2026, NFDI hosted a meeting of the EOSC Federation Build-Up Group in Karlsruhe that set the course for the next phase of the EOSC Federation. Together with EUDAT, NFDI welcomed representatives of EOSC Nodes from across Europe to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
NFDI plays a dual role in EOSC: the association is the Mandated Organisation for Germany in the EOSC Association and has also been selected as one of 13 Candidate Nodes working together in the Build-Up Group on the initial phase of the EOSC Federation.
The two-day event focused on the upcoming transition of the EOSC Federation to operational status. The target date is the EOSC Symposium on 14–16 October 2026, by which several EOSC Nodes aim to be production-ready. Participants agreed on a 10-point checklist for the initial production phase as well as weekly status updates until the Symposium. In addition, progress was made on legal frameworks, cybersecurity requirements and the Service Management System. A new working group on Federated Computing and Storage was established.
The meeting in Karlsruhe sent a strong signal: NFDI and the EOSC community are working together to connect European research data infrastructures in a sustainable way.
