Wie geht es mit NFDI nach 2028 weiter? Wissenschaftsrat legt Evaluationsbericht vor.

Der Wissenschaftsrat (WR) hat in seiner Sitzung am 11. Juli 2025 einen Bericht zur Strukturevaluation der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) beschlossen. Dieser ist für die zukünftige Ausgestaltung von NFDI von hoher Relevanz. NFDI bedankt sich für die zahlreichen wertvollen Impulse, die aus dem Bericht hervorgehen und begrüßt die Empfehlung zur weiteren Förderung und Ausgestaltung des Netzwerks sehr. Mehr

What’s next for NFDI after 2028? German Science and Humanities Council presents evaluation report.

At its meeting on 11 July 2025, the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) adopted a report on the structural evaluation of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). This is highly relevant for the future design of NFDI.

NFDI would like to thank the Council for the numerous valuable impulses that emerged from the report and very much welcomes the recommendation for the further funding and organisation of the network. Mehr

Gute Nachrichten für NFDI: GWK beschließt weitere Förderung aller Konsortien der ersten Runde

Alle neun Konsortien der ersten Förderrunde werden weitergefördert. Darüber hat die Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz (GWK) am 4. Juli entschieden. Die neue Förderperiode für die zweite Projektphase beginnt für DataPLANT, GHGA, KonsortSWD, NFDI4Biodiversity, NFDI4Cat, NFDI4Chem, NFDI4Culture, NFDI4Health und NFDI4ING im Oktober. Bis Ende 2028 stellen Bund und Länder insgesamt rund 92 Millionen Euro zur Verfügung. Mehr

Good news for NFDI: GWK decides to continue funding all consortia of the first round

All nine consortia from the first funding round will continue to receive funding. This was decided by the Joint Science Conference (GWK) on 4 July. The new funding period for the second project phase will begin in October for DataPLANT, GHGA, KonsortSWD, NFDI4Biodiversity, NFDI4Cat, NFDI4Chem, NFDI4Culture, NFDI4Health and NFDI4ING. The federal and state governments are providing a total of around 92 million euros until the end of 2028. More

In der achten Ausschreibungsrunde von Base4NFDI hat Jupyter4NFDI die Zusage von der NFDI-Konsortialversammlung für eine Finanzierung der Integrationsphase erhalten.

Jupyter4NFDI zielt darauf ab, den fragmentierten Einsatz von Jupyter Notebooks in den NFDI-Konsortien durch das Angebot eines zentralisierten JupyterHubs zu verbessern und somit einen signifikanten Beitrag in Richtung Open Science zu leisten. Geplant ist eine Integration mit IAM4NFDI für die Zugangsverwaltung und die Bereitstellung des Zugangs zu HPC-Ressourcen von GCS und der NHR Alliance. Der Service wird bereits von einigen Konsortien genutzt. In der Integrationsphase will Jupyter4NFDI sein Angebot weiter ausbauen und somit für die Mehrheit der NFDI-Konsortien an Relevanz gewinnen.

Die Base4NFDI Services stellen eine Erweiterung der NFDI-Initiative zum Aufbau von Basisdiensten für Konsortien dar und sind ein weiterer Schritt nach vorne in den Bemühungen, FDM-fähige Dienste aus der gesamten deutschen Forschungslandschaft zu schaffen.

Base4NFDI is delighted to announce that Jupyter4NFDI has been accepted for funding for the Integration phase following the Consortia Assembly’s decision!

Jupyter4NFDI aims to improve the fragmented use of Jupyter notebooks in the NFDI consortia by offering a centralised JupyterHub, making this a key infrastructure service to streamline and underpin open science practices. Integration with IAM4NFDI is planned for access management and the provision of access to HPC resources from GCS and the NHR Alliance. The service is already being used by some NFDI consortia. During the Integration phase, Jupyter4NFDI intends to further expand its offers and thus gain relevance for the majority of NFDI consortia.

KonsortSWD: Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialwissenschaftlicher Institute e.V. (ASI) künftig enger an RatSWD angebunden

Der traditionsreiche Verein, gegründet 1953, soll fortan mit der Arbeit des RatSWD verzahnt und so auch Teil der Community von KonsortSWD werden. Die Mitgliederversammlung des Vereins hat am 13. Juni eine entsprechende Satzungsänderung beschlossen. Vorausgegangen war ein Strategieprozess zur Zukunft der ASI. Durch die Zusammenarbeit und organisatorische Verbindungen sollen Synergien im Sinne für die empirische Sozialforschung in Deutschland geschaffen werden. Die Vereinskoordination wird künftig in der RatSWD Geschäftsstelle am WZB angesiedelt.

KonsortSWD: Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialwissenschaftlicher Institute e.V. (ASI) more closely linked to RatSWD

The long-established association, founded in 1953, will be integrated into the work of the German Data Forum (RatSWD) and thus also become part of the KonsortSWD community. The association’s general meeting on June 13 approved a corresponding amendment to the statutes. This was preceded by a strategy process on the future of the ASI. The cooperation and organizational links are intended to create synergies for empirical social research in Germany.

Impulspapiere zu NFDI-Dienstportfolio und Finanzflüssen veröffentlicht

Der Wissenschaftsrat (WR) hat am 14. Juli 2025 die Ergebnisse der Strukturevaluation der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) veröffentlicht. Mit seinem Bericht legt der WR Empfehlungen für die weitere Ausgestaltung von NFDI vor. Die NFDI-Task Force Governance and Sustainability (TFGS) befasst sich ebenfalls mit dem Themenkomplex. In ihrem Arbeitsplan „Schritte zur Weiterentwicklung unserer NFDI“ hat die TFGS klare Rahmenbedingungen für die Weiterentwicklung der Struktur und Finanzierung von NFDI definiert.

Mit zwei Papieren legt die TFGS nun erste Impulse zur Weiterentwicklung von NFDI vor, die die gesamte Breite von NFDI widerspiegeln und von anderen Organen des NFDI-Vereins entsprechend aufgegriffen werden können. Mehr

Impulse papers on NFDI service portfolio and financial flows published

On July 14, 2025, the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR) presented the results of its structural evaluation of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). In its report, the WR makes recommendations for the further development of NFDI. The NFDI Task Force Governance and Sustainability (TFGS) is also addressing this issue. In its work plan “Steps for the Further Development of our NFDI,” the TFGS has defined clear framework conditions for the further development of the structure and financing of NFDI.

With two papers, the TFGS is now presenting initial ideas for the further development of NFDI, which reflect the entire scope of NFDI and can be taken up by other bodies of the NFDI association. More

GESIS Knowledge Graph Version 1.0.0 veröffentlicht 

Der GESIS Knowledge Graph stellt Metadaten aller in der GESIS-Suche verfügbaren wissenschaftlichen Ressourcen dar und macht die semantischen Beziehungen zwischen Ressourcen wie Forschungsdaten, Veröffentlichungen, Erhebungsinstrumenten und Erhebungsvariablen sichtbar. Durch die Einhaltung etablierter Standards wie W3C-Standards, gemeinsamer Vokabulare und PIDs, und die Bereitstellung flexibler Zugriffsmethoden, verbessert GESIS KG die Interoperabilität, die Auffindbarkeit von Metadaten, erfasst die Provenienz und unterstützt die Reproduzierbarkeit von Forschung. Die praktischen Anwendungen des GESIS KG sind vielfältig und decken ein breites Spektrum von Nutzerbedürfnissen ab. NFDI4DS ist an der Entwicklung des GESIS KG beteiligt.

GESIS Knowledge Graph Version 1.0.0 released

The GESIS Knowledge Graph represents metadata of all scientific resources available in the GESIS Search and exposes the semantic relationships between resources such as research data, publications, survey instruments and survey variables. By adhering to established standards like W3C standards, common vocabularies, and PIDs, and offering flexible access methods, GESIS KG improves interoperability, metadata discoverability, captures provenance, and supports research reproducibility. The practical applications of the GESIS KG are diverse and cater to a wide range of user needs. NFDI4DS is involved in the development of the GESIS KG. KonsortSWD: Software-Quellcode zum Anonymisierungstool QualiAnon jetzt verfügbar

QualiAnon ist ein halbautomatisiertes Tool zur Anonymisierung oder Pseudonymisierung von Textdaten, welches das Forschungsdatenzentrum Qualiservice kostenfrei für die datenschutzkonforme flexible Anonymisierung oder Pseudonymisierung textgebundener Forschungsdaten am eigenen Schreibtisch oder im Repositorium anbietet. KonsortSWD: software source code for the QualiAnon anonymization tool now available

QualiAnon is a semi-automated tool for anonymizing or pseudonymizing text data, which the Qualiservice research data center offers free of charge for the flexible anonymization or pseudonymization of text-based research data in compliance with data protection regulations, either at your own desk or in the repository. Das NFDI4Earth Learning Portal verbindet Open Educational Resources mit innovativen Bildungstechnologien, um Nutzer:innen eine ansprechende, interaktive Lernerfahrung zu bieten. Der FAIRagro Search Hub bringt Datensätze aus den verschiedenen Bereichen der Agrarsystemforschung (in erster Linie Pflanzen, Boden und Umwelt) zusammen. Patient:innenperspektiven für eine transparente Genomdaten-Governance

GHGA entwickelt gemeinsam mit Patient:innen Konzepte für transparente und inklusive Daten-Governance. Die neu veröffentlichte PaGODA-Studie zeigt, dass Patient:innen Transparenz, klare Rollen für ihre Mitwirkung und echten Einfluss auf Entscheidungen schätzen. Fokusgruppen für unser geplantes Informationsportal betonen den Bedarf an verständlicher Sprache, Transparenz über Risiken, praxisnahen Beispielen zur Datennutzung und einen Mix von Fach- und Patient:innenperspektiven. Diese Erkenntnisse helfen, eine vertrauenswürdige und patientennahe Governance für genomische Daten zu gestalten.

Shaping Genomic Data Governance with Patient Voices

At GHGA, we’re learning how patient perspectives can strengthen both data governance and communication. The newly published PaGODA study shows that patients value transparency, clear roles for their engagement, and real influence in decision-making. Focus groups for our upcoming information portal highlight the need for accessible language, transparency about risks, real-world examples of data use, and a balance of expert and patient voices. These insights are helping us build more trustworthy, inclusive genomic research.

Leitlinie zu CARE-Prinzipien erschienen

Die Wahrung von Rechten und Interessen indigener Gemeinschaften beim Umgang mit Daten, die sie betreffen, sind für NFDI4Culture ein maßgebliches Anliegen in ihrem Arbeitsprogramm. Die sogenannten „CARE-Prinzipien“ (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics) bilden dabei einen wichtigen Bezugsrahmen. Daher wurde eine CARE-Leitlinie für einen konsistenten und angemessenen Umgang mit diesen Prinzipien entwickelt. Sie enthält zum einen eine Basis an Hintergrundwissen und zum anderen Empfehlungen dazu, wie wir Inhalte zu und über die CARE-Prinzipien gut kommunizieren können.

Guideline on CARE principles published

Safeguarding the rights and interests of indigenous communities when handling data that affects them, the so-called “CARE Principles” (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics), are a key concern for NFDI4Culture in its work program. A CARE guideline for a consistent and appropriate approach to these CARE principles has therefore been developed and has just been published. On the one hand, it contains a basis of background knowledge and, on the other, recommendations on how we can communicate content on and about the CARE principles well.

GHGA beim genomDE Symposium 2025: Daten, Vertrauen, Wirkung

Auf dem 4. genomDE Symposium wurde deutlich: Die Zukunft der Genommedizin braucht vertrauenswürdige, interoperable Dateninfrastrukturen. In der GHGA-Sitzung wurden internationale Beispiele vorgestellt und die Bedeutung sicherer, FAIR-konformer Systeme für Forschung im großen Maßstab betont. At the 4th genomDE Symposium, it became clear: the future of genomic medicine depends not just on technology, but on trusted, interoperable data infrastructures. GHGA’s session highlighted international examples and emphasized the need for secure, FAIR-compliant systems to enable research at scale. Förderung von Zusammenarbeit: 6. FAIRmat Users Meeting

Am 2. und 3. Juli kam die FAIRmat-Community an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum zu ihrem halbjährigen Treffen zusammen. Im Mittelpunkt standen diesmal KI- und ML-gestützte Materialwissenschaften und die Frage, wie die FAIR-Datenprinzipien Forschungsdaten „AI-ready“ machen. Zu den Highlights zählten Fachvorträge, zwei praxisnahe NOMAD-Workshops und eine lebhafte Postersession. Die Aufzeichnungen sind in Kürze auf dem FAIRmat  YouTube-Kanal verfügbar. Fostering Collaboration: Sixth FAIRmat Users Meeting

On July 2-3, the FAIRmat community came together at Ruhr-Universität Bochum for its semi-annual meeting. This time, the focus was on AI- and ML-driven materials science and how the FAIR data principles make research data “AI-ready”. Highlights included expert talks, two hands-on NOMAD workshops, and a lively poster session. The recordings will be soon available on the FAIRmat YouTube channel. Registrierung für CoRDI und UC4B 2025 noch geöffnet!

Die zweite Ausgabe der Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI) findet vom 26. bis 28. August an der RWTH Aachen statt. Geplant ist ein breit gefächertes Programm mit Keynotes, Vorträgen, Poster-Sessions und einem Markt der Möglichkeiten. Die Anmeldung für die 2. CoRDI ist bis zum 8. August möglich, Tickets können Sie über das Eventbrite-Buchungssystem erwerben.

Die diesjährige Base4NFDI User Conference (UC4B 2025) findet vom 28. bis 29. August direkt im Anschluss an die CoRDI 2025 in Aachen statt. Das interaktive Programm gibt den Basisdienst-Teams die Möglichkeit, sich zu präsentieren, den Austausch mit internationalen Experten zu fördern und auch über den Stand des Projekts Base4NFDI zu berichten. Zentrales Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Basisdienste-Teams und Konsortien zu fördern. Highlights der Konferenz sind die Keynote-Präsentation von Rosie Hicks (Australian Research Data Commons) und die Paneldiskussion mit dem International Advisory Board von Base4NFDI. Die Anmeldung ist kostenfrei und noch bis zum 1. August  möglich.

CoRDI and UC4B 2025 registration still open!

The second edition of the Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI) will take place from 26 to 28 August at RWTH Aachen University. A broad programme with keynotes, lectures, poster sessions and a market of opportunities is planned. Registration for the 2nd CoRDI from 26-28 August is open until 8 August, tickets can be purchased via the Eventbrite booking system.

This year’s Base4NFDI User Conference (UC4B 2025) will take place from 28. until 29. August, directly after CoRDI 2025 in Aachen. The interactive programme gives the basic service teams the opportunity to present themselves, promote exchange with international experts and also report on the status of the Base4NFDI project. The central aim of the event is to promote cooperation between basic services teams and consortia. Highlights of the conference will be the keynote presentation by Rosie Hicks (Australian Research Data Commons) and the panel discussion with the International Advisory Board of Base4NFDI. Registration is still open until 1st August and participation is free of charge.
