(Published on 01.10.2021) Funding for ten more NFDI consortia began at the beginning of October. The decision had already been made by the Joint Science Conference (GWK) on 2 July. The GWK followed the recommendation of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The new ten consortia in overview:

- FAIRmat – FAIR Data Infrastructure for Condensed Matter Physics and Chemical Physics of Solids
- MaRDI – Mathematical Research Data Initiative
- NFDI4DataScience – NFDI for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- NFDI4Earth – NFDI Consortium Earth System Sciences
- NFDI4Microbiota – National Research Data Infrastructure for Microbiota Research
- NFDI-MatWerk – National Research Data Infrastructure for Materials Science & Engineering
- PUNCH4NFDI – Particles, Universe, Nuclei and Hadrons for NFDI
- Text+ – Language and text-based research data infrastructure
Prof. Dr. York Sure-Vetter, Director of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. association, congratulated the new consortia on the start of funding: “I am pleased that our network continues to grow and more and more scientific fields are being covered. We now want to integrate the ten new consortia of the second round into the existing structures that we have built up since the founding of the association last October. I warmly welcome all the collaborators to NFDI.”
A total of 19 consortia from a wide range of scientific disciplines are now being funded within the framework of NFDI. The participating institutions are spread throughout Germany and form a large network that is pushing forward the design of effective research data management on a national and international level.
In the coming months, the new consortia will establish their organisational structures and join cross-consortia groups with different thematic focuses. “We already have a year of intensive development behind us, which was characterised by a lot of cross-consortia support,” says Eva Lübke, Administrative Director of the NFDI Association. “The high level of cooperation provides a good basis for the rapid integration of the new ten consortia. I would like to thank all the consortia in the first round and our partners for their commitment, as well as our funders for their support.”
Up to 30 consortia are to be funded under the NFDI by 2022. The federal and state governments want to provide up to 90 million euros annually for the development of NFDI.

Five years ago, on 12 October 2020, the German federal and state governments jointly founded the association Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) e.V. in Hannover. More than 300 institutions are now members, and the association continues to grow. RDM in Action: Highlights oft CoRDI 2025
Almost 700 people attended the Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI) 2025 at RWTH Aachen University. The three-day conference, held from 26 to 28 August at C.A.R.L. (Central Auditorium for Research and Learning), focused on making better use of research data and the resulting added value for science and society. The motto ‘RDM (Research Data Management) in Action’ was reflected in all presentations, discussions and posters.
NFDI Directorate: Susanne Walter-Augustin appointed as new Administrative Director
Susanne Walter-Augustin was appointed Administrative Director in June 2025. She has been contributing her extensive experience in administration, finance and project management since 1 August 2025. With a degree in business administration, she previously held various management positions in social, cultural and educational institutions.
