Project presentation at re:publica

At this year’s edition of re:publica, FAIR Data Spaces coordinator Dr Christoph Lange-Bever spoke about the organizational, legal, technical and practical prerequisites for a fair data economy for business, science and society. The FAIR Data Spaces project creates building blocks for overarching data spaces as nuclei of a fair data economy based on common principles. After the first year of the project, the first demonstrators show that sovereign and trustful data exchange between the different domains is feasible. The expectedly critical audience answered the question about what problems data exchange between business, science and society could solve with, among others: ecological transformation of cities, fair compensation of users, fixing the broken data economy, fair taxation, and seal of origin for data.

One year FAIR Data Spaces

On 17 May, we celebrated our first anniversary. We have now been working together for more than a year on the vision of creating a cloud-based data space for science and industry. Let’s take a moment to look back at the past year before we continue our path full of energy! We are very much looking forward to the second year and to seeing you again or getting to know you at the one or other workshop.

Evaluation of the legal protection of machine-generated data

The ITM Münster (Institute for Information, Telecommunications and Media Law) – responsible for the evaluation of intellectual property aspects in FAIR Data Spaces – has recently evaluated the legal protection of machine-generated raw data. This raises a number of challenges, particularly with regard to the protection of trade secrets under the German Trade Secrets Act (GeschGehG) and copyright protection, which will be examined in this article (in German, access via the FAIR newsletter archive). If you have not already done so, subscribe to the FAIR newsletter (available in German only) to receive weekly updates on legal developments relating to FAIR Data Spaces.

FAIR Data Spaces now part of the Terminology Service

The TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology is developing the Terminology Service for the NFDI initiatives. In FAIR Data Spaces, it is planned to make this service also available for Gaia-X and International Data Spaces, so that participants can develop a common understanding of the data to be exchanged by means of terminologies, vocabularies and ontologies. As a first success, we now have a collection of currently 30 ontologies in the Terminology Service, which are used in the various demonstrators of FAIR Data Spaces to improve the exchange of data between industry and science.

Recap: Demonstrator workshops

To promote the development of common use cases and to get an overview of the interrelationships in the overall architecture, internal project workshops were held on the architecture of three demonstrators in FAIR Data Spaces:

In the demonstrator workshop from the NFDI4Biodiversity domain the connection with the CORE storage and the current status of containerization were presented. The subsequent discussion provided important insights into the topics of authentication and authorization, which will advance the further development of the demonstrator.

In the joint workshop of all demonstrators, interfaces and commonalities were identified on the basis of the previous three workshops and possibilities for future cooperation were discussed.

Dr. Christoph Lange

Hello, I’m Christoph Lange-Bever. I head the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. I research and develop on data infrastructures and knowledge engineering: from choosing the right representation for domain knowledge to scalable implementation of data and knowledge sharing using Linked (Open) Data and FAIR Data principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable – alternatively one can say “fully AI ready”).  Applications range from information integration in companies to research infrastructures and cross-organizational data spaces. I am an enthusiastic cyclist, both privately with my children in a trailer or cargo bike and on business trips with a folding bike on the train and then traveling in foreign cities.
