Launched in summer 2024, the GHGA Data Portal represents a major milestone for the German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA). It addresses a central challenge in biomedical research: enabling the secure archiving and responsible sharing of sensitive human genomic data while achieving and maintaining the highest standards of data protection and regulatory compliance.

As of February 2026, the GHGA Data Portal hosts 168 datasets, containing data from over 18,000 individuals. The collection includes high-quality, curated datasets from oncology and rare diseases, featuring landmark initiatives such as the MASTER and INFORM Studies. These figures demonstrate the portal’s strong early adoption as a trusted national archive for sensitive human genomic data. Studies listed in GHGA have already been cited in various publications underscoring GHGAs credibility and compliance with international standards. GHGA is also listed on re3data.org and FAIRsharing.org

As a national infrastructure, GHGA underpins controlled-access data sharing by enabling German research organisations to archive and manage sensitive data.Researchers can submit access requests, which are carefully reviewed and authorized by the responsible data controllers to ensure full compliance with ethical and legal requirements. To date, 92 data access requests have been submitted, highlighting the portal’s growing role as an operational platform for collaboration and discovery. By combining secure storage with responsible access, the GHGA Data Portal strengthens Germany’s research capabilities and lays a robust foundation for future advances in precision medicine.

GHGA actively supports large-scale national initiatives that are beginning to generate human genome data, including the NAKO Gesundheitsstudie and the genomDE Modellvorhaben. With the goal of integrating these emerging datasets under secure governance in the future, GHGA is laying the groundwork for their long-term preservation and responsible scientific use. In doing so, it demonstrates its adaptability to the evolving needs of Germany’s research landscape.
