1st Conference on Research Data Infrastructure
– Connecting Communities –

Research data form the basis for knowledge and innovation throughout all scientific disciplines. They play a fundamental role in the progress of our society. The key to using these data treasures is an effective infrastructure.

The Association German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is initiating the first Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI) from 12th to 14th September 2023. The main topics of the conference include technical and non-technical aspects for establishing interdisciplinary research data management (RDM).

The Conference on Research Data Infrastructure stands for more comprehensive knowledge through better use of research data, for innovations and the resulting social benefits. Under this year’s theme “Connecting Communities”, national and international stakeholders from all research fields as well as from the infrastructure sector are invited to present their contributions to an excellent RDM of the future and to exchange information about the latest developments. NFDI is organizing the conference in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). NFDI contributors as well as all other RDM interested stakeholders will have the opportunity to meet at the KIT Campus South.

Topics of Interest

There will be disciplinary tracks and cross-disciplinary tracks. We encourage submissions from national, European and global initiatives and programmes, including, but not limited to: NFDI, EOSC, ESFRI, RDA, ReSA, Australian Data Commons, NIH Biocommons, NIST etc.

The disciplinary tracks address infrastructure aspects relevant for the individual disciplines:

  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Natural Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Engineering

The cross-disciplinary tracks address more specific topics regarding the delivery of RDM infrastructure:

  • Enabling RDM (incl. software): The aim of the contributions in this track is to develop infrastructure and software components that can be used by the entire community and ensure interoperability so that network effects can be systematically exploited. This includes infrastructure for data analysis such as workflow platforms.
  • Harmonising RDM: This track is about (meta-)data, terminologies and provenance and how research data management can be harmonised on a broad basis across organisations and disciplines.
  • Securing RDM: This track addresses ethical, legal and social issues associated with collecting and working with research data.
  • Spreading RDM: The contributions to the track all deal with the multi-faceted topic of data literacy which plays a key role in solving current and future societal challenges and in understanding digital culture.
  • Linking RDM: This track focuses on how research data can be shared as freely and openly as possible between the domains of science, business and society, taking into account the interests of different stakeholders.
  • Connecting RDM: This track has a focus on how international and national Research Data Infrastructures can be synergistically connected with each other.

The deadline for submissions has passed.

  • We are soliciting submission of Extended Abstracts with up to 1.000 words (references excluded), and the use of figures is encouraged. 
  • All submissions have to be submitted via TIB Open Publishing.
  • Each submission should clearly indicate the track it is to be submitted to, and how the work relates to Research Data Infrastructures addressing the topics of that track.
  • The conference language is English, but German-language submissions are also acceptable.


The Track Chairs will review each submission for timeliness and relevance, substance and soundness, clarity and impact for acceptance. The Track Chairs may include members of the Programme Committee for reviewing the submissions to their track.

Proceedings and Presentations

Accepted submissions will be part of the conference proceedings and will be published Open Access under the CC BY Licence with the authors keeping the rights in the contributions.

Submissions will be “accepted as presentation”, “accepted as poster” or “rejected”. All accepted submissions will be part of the proceedings.

It is expected that at least one author of each accepted submission registers for attending the conference and presenting the Extended Abstract. Each Extended Abstract will be presented in a 15 minutes presentation followed by a 5 minutes round of discussion or as a poster.

In order to allow for a smooth proceedings production, we would like to ask the authors of accepted submissions (presentation and poster) to upload them in the following form until July 20:

    • Please upload a zip of the compilable .tex file with all additional needed files (e.g. .png, .jpeg, etc.).

For uploading the material, please login to our submission system and reply to our message in the „Discussion“ menue, adding all missing files via the “Upload File” button. We have informed all affected authors by e-mail.

Important Dates

We would like to thank our community for numerous submissions.
Due to the large number of submissions, the deadlines for the review process have been extended.

  • Extended Abstract submissions due: April 26, 2023 at 12 noon CEST
  • Extended Abstract notifications due: End of June/beginning of July
  • Extended Abstract camera-ready due: July 20, 2023
  • Conference days: September 12-14,  2023
