Neue Sektion Industry Engagement koordiniert Zusammenarbeit mit der Wirtschaft

Die NFDI-Sektionen widmen sich Themen, die für alle oder mehrere Konsortien relevant sind. Über die Grenzen der Konsortien und der verschiedenen Disziplinen hinweg werden die gemeinsamen Querschnittsthemen angegangen. Nun startet mit Industry Engagement (section-industry) die fünfte Sektion. Ihrer Einrichtung im Verein hat der Wissenschaftliche Senat am 22. März 2023 zugestimmt.

Das übergreifende Ziel der Sektion Industry Engagement ist es, die Zusammenarbeit mit der Wirtschaft zu koordinieren und so weitere Mehrwerte für die Gesellschaft zu erschließen. Genau wie in der Wissenschaft werden in der Wirtschaft kontinuierlich Daten erhoben und mit Methoden und Standards gearbeitet, welche für mehrere Wissenschaftsdisziplinen von großer Wichtigkeit sind. Umgekehrt verfügt auch die Wissenschaft über Daten und methodische Kompetenzen, die für die Wirtschaft sehr bedeutend sind. New section Industry Engagement coordinates cooperation with industry

The NFDI sections are dedicated to topics that are relevant to all or several consortia. Common cross-cutting topics are tackled across the boundaries of the consortia and the various disciplines. Now the fifth section, Industry Engagement (section-industry), is starting. Its establishment in the association was approved by the Scientific Senate on 22 March 2023.

The overarching goal of the Industry Engagement section is to coordinate cooperation with industry and thereby create more value for society. Just like in science, industry continuously collects data and works with methods and standards that are of great importance for several scientific disciplines. On the other hand, science also has data and methodological competences that are very important for industry. More information on the Industry Engagement Section will be available here soon.

Mastodon: NFDI betreibt eigene Instanz

Mastodon stellt als dezentrales Netzwerk eine Alternative zu bekannten Social Media Plattformen wie z.B. Twitter dar. NFDI hat jetzt mit https://nfdi.social/ eine eigene Instanz an den Start gebracht. Die Instanz soll ein Ort sein, an dem sich User über Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) austauschen können und spannende Themen aus den Konsortien sowie der Wissenschaft teilen. nfdi.social ist für die NFDI-Community, aber auch für Personen aus anderen FDM-Institutionen, die mit NFDI verbunden sind, offen. Mastodon: NFDI runs its own instance

As a decentralized network, Mastodon represents an alternative to well-known social media platforms such as Twitter. NFDI has now launched its own instance: https://nfdi.social/.

The instance is designed to be a place where users can share ideas about research data management (RDM) and discuss exciting topics from the consortia as well as the scientific community. nfdi.social is open to the NFDI community, but also to individuals from other RDM institutions associated with NFDI. Die ersten NFDI4Culture Video-Tutorials sind online

Die Forschungsdaten rund um materielles und immaterielles Kulturerbe sind sehr komplex und vielschichtig. Mit den Videos „3D-Objekte – Das digitale Erbe virtuell“ und „Was sind Normdaten?“ möchte das Konsortium einen niedrigschwelligen und verständlichen Einblick in die jeweilige Thematik geben. Zu finden sind die Tutorials, neben eigenen Handreichungen und Linkempfehlungen, in der NFDI4Culture Knowledge Base.

First NFDI4Culture video tutorials are online

The research data on tangible and intangible cultural assets is very complex and multi-layered. With the videos „3D Objects – The Virtual Digital Heritage“ and „What are Authority Data?“, the consortium wants to provide a low-threshold and understandable insight into the respective topics. The tutorials can be found in the NFDI4Culture Knowledge Base, along with own guidelines and recommended links.

Der Rat für Informationsinfrastrukturen (RfII) veröffentlicht einen Vergleich und Anregungen zu Ausbau und Weiterentwicklung von NFDI, EOSC und Gaia-X

Der RfII bietet in seinem aktuellen Bericht „Föderierte Dateninfrastrukturen für die wissenschaftliche Nutzung“ einen Überblick zu den drei Initiativen – NFDI, der European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) und der transnationalen Gaia-X Association for Data and Cloud –, indem er ihre jeweilige Entstehungsgeschichte, ihre Strukturen und grundlegenden Ziele in einer vergleichenden Analyse gegenüberstellt und offene Fragen für die weitere Entwicklung identifiziert.

Im zweiten Schritt leitet der RfII aus dieser Vergleichsanalyse Anregungen für verschiedene Akteur:innen für eine engagierte Mitgestaltung des Ausbaus und der weiteren Entwicklung ab. Die Empfehlungen betreffen u.a. das Engagement von Forschenden, wichtige Fragen der Vernetzung der verschiedenen Initiativen und Strukturen, eine entsprechende Anpassung und Reform von Förderprogrammen sowie Auf- und Ausbau von Kompetenzen und langfristigen Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten. The German Council for Scientific Information Infrastructures (RfII) publishes a comparison and suggestions on the expansion and further development of NFDI, EOSC and Gaia-X

In its current report „Federated Data Infrastructures for Scientific Use“, the RfII provides an overview of the three initiatives – NFDI, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and the transnational Gaia-X Association for Data and Cloud – by comparing their origins, structures and basic goals in a comparative analysis and identifying open questions for further development.

In a second step, the RfII derives from this comparative analysis suggestions for various actors for a committed involvement in shaping the expansion and further development. The recommendations concern, among other things, the commitment of researchers, important questions of networking the various initiatives and structures, a corresponding adaptation and reform of funding programmes, as well as the development and expansion of competencies and long-term financing possibilities. Newsletter “Math and Data Quarterly”

Der MaRDI-Newsletter bietet Neuigkeiten und Einblicke in das Reich der mathematischen Forschungsdaten. In jedem Newsletter werden neben einem Hauptartikel zum aktuellen Thema auch eine Folge der Interviewserie „Data Dates“ sowie Neuigkeiten aus dem MaRDI-Universum und anderen Konsortien veröffentlicht. Den Abschluss des Newsletters bilden Leseempfehlungen zum Thema, die auch Videos, Links zu Datenbanken oder sogar Comic-Sammlungen umfassen. Den Newsletter kann man hier lesen, und sich hier anmelden.

Eine Serie zu den FAIR-Prinzipien ist gerade mit der vierten Ausgabe zum Thema Wiederverwendbarkeit (Reusability) abgeschlossen worden. Die Serie behandelt Fragen und Themen wie das Auffinden von Daten, die Auffindbarkeit und Wiederverwendbarkeit eigener digitaler mathematischer Objekte, die Verwaltung von Dateien zwischen Koautor:innen und die nahtlose Übergabe eines digitalen Objekts von Forscher:in zu Forscher:in. Sie ist weiterhin verfügbar.

Math and Data Quarterly Newsletter

The MaRDI newsletter provides news and insights into the field of mathematical research data. In each newsletter, in addition to a main article on a current topic, an episode of the interview series „Data Dates“ is published, as well as news from the MaRDI universe and other consortia. The newsletter closes with recommended literature on the topic, which also includes videos, links to databases or even comic collections. You can read the newsletter here, and subscribe here.

A series on FAIR principles has just been completed with the fourth issue on reusability. The series covers issues and topics such as locating data, locating and reusing your own digital mathematical objects, managing files between co-authors, and seamlessly passing a digital object from one researcher to another. It is still available.

Task Force Evaluation und Reporting publiziert White Paper als Grundlage für Zwischenberichte der Konsortien

In einer NFDI Task Force für Evaluation und Reporting wird an der Vorbereitung der Zwischenberichte der Konsortien und der Strukturevaluation von NFDI gearbeitet. Dazu verfassten Mitglieder der Task Force das White Paper „Interim Report Reference“. Durch gemeinsam vereinbarte Definitionen von konsortienübergreifenden Themen schafft das Paper eine Grundlage für die Zwischenberichte der Konsortien an die DFG. Die Konsortialversammlung hat in ihrer Sitzung am 13. Januar 2023 einstimmig beschlossen, dass das White Paper für die Berichterstellung an die DFG genutzt werden soll. Task Force Evaluation and Reporting publishes white paper as basis for interim reports of the consortia

The NFDI Task Force for Evaluation and Reporting is working on the preparation of the interim reports of the consortia and the structural evaluation of NFDI. For this purpose, members of the task force wrote the white paper “Interim Report Reference”. The paper creates a basis for the consortia’s interim reports to DFG through jointly agreed definitions of cross-consortium topics. You can download the complete white paper at Zenodo.

Rückblick zum All-Hands-on-Deck-Meeting: NFDI-MatWerk bringt Materialwissenschaft voran

Das zweite All-Hands-on-Deck-Meeting (AHoD2) der NFDI-MatWerk-Initiative fand vom 8. bis 9. März hybrid in Siegburg statt. Sowohl Vertreter:innen der fünf Task Areas als auch der Participant Projects beteiligten sich.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Eberl, Sprecher des Konsortiums, zog für das Treffen eine positive Bilanz: „Personally, I’m very pleased with how many bright and creative minds are assembled in this endeavour, as well as their high motivation to solve some of the fundamental challenges in the Digital Transformation of Materials Science and Engineering and allow us to bring forward a new way of data-driven science. “

Im ersten Jahr lag der Fokus auf dem Onboarding in den Aufgabenbereichen Infrastruktur, Ontologie, Workflows, Community Interaction und Strategieentwicklung sowie den beteiligten Institutionen in ganz Deutschland. Im zweiten Jahr hat das NFDI-MatWerk-Team entschlossen, eine offene Entwicklungsumgebung über die Task Areas hinweg zu schaffen und die Interaktion mit den teilnehmenden Projekten kontinuierlich zu erhöhen. Dazu lädt auch die hybrid organisierte NFDI-MatWerk Conference vom 27. bis 29. Juni in Siegburg und online ein.

Review of the All-Hands-on-Deck-Meeting: NFDI-MatWerk brings materials science forward

The second All-Hands-on-Deck-Meeting (AHoD2) of the NFDI-MatWerk initiative took place from 8 to 9 March hybrid in Siegburg. Representatives of the five Task Areas as well as the Participant Projects took part.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Eberl, speaker of the consortium, drew a positive balance for the meeting: „Personally, I’m very pleased with how many bright and creative minds are assembled in this endeavour, as well as their high motivation to solve some of the fundamental challenges in the Digital Transformation of Materials Science and Engineering and allow us to bring forward a new way of data-driven science. „

In the first year, the focus was on onboarding in the task areas of infrastructure, ontology, workflows, community interaction and strategy development, as well as the participating institutions across Germany. In the second year, the NFDI-MatWerk team decided to create an open development environment across the task areas and to continuously increase the interaction with the participating projects. The hybrid organised NFDI-MatWerk Conference from 27 to 29 June in Siegburg and online also provides an invitation in this regard.
